default
Posted on Tue, 24 Nov 2015
Question: Good day,

My left knee is swollen from the side (right side of the knee (inner)) and it has a pulsating pain. Pain increases when I straighten my knee. I weigh 55 kg, and am 165 cm tall, no previous injuries to my left knee, pain started 3 days ago while playing football, but I managed to play on. Today the pain increased and I can say it is level 6 or 7 out of 10, especially when locking the knee.

Brief Answer:
Medial meniscus cartilage tear

Detailed Answer:
Hi there.

Welcome to Healthcare.

Thanks for the query.

Do you have pain in flexing the knee to full range ?

Do you have any feeling of slipping or giving away of the knee especially while walking downhill or downstairs ?

According to your history, it is possible you may have torn your Medial meniscus cartilage and possibly injured your Medial collateral ligament.

I advise you to not play Football for some time. Wear a long knee brace. Apply ice. Keep the limb elevated over pillows. Wait for 6 weeks after the trauma and get an MRI. Take pain killers like Tablet Ibuprofen 400mg twice a day for 5 days after meals. Also take Tablet Ranitidine 150mg twice a day, half an hour before meals.

Kindly answer my queries for me to be in a better position to help you.

Regards,

Brief Answer:
Inductees meniscus tear and ACL tear

Detailed Answer:
Yes, Pain on flexing could indicate meniscus tear. Also of it feels loose it could induce Anterior cruciate ligament or ACL tear.

Kindly get an MRI knee done and follow up with me on this regard. Till then wear a long knee brace, and follow the tips and precautions as mentioned earlier.

Dr. Aashish Raghu
