Posted on Mon, 19 May 2014
Question: 2 wks ago I started having bad pain in my left hip area. I went to my MD and he said it was probably muscle pain and would go away soon. It has gradually gotten better although it still hurts, I have been applying heat and that helps. Now I find the shin on my left leg is starting to get numb, like it's getting ready to go to sleep.
It seems to be in the front part of that leg below the knee, and I don't have any strength in that leg to step up. My health is generally good. I am 82 yrs. old, female

Brief Answer:
Arthritis of the hip joint...

Detailed Answer:
Hi.

I have gone through your query and I understand your concerns.

Your symptoms might be related to arthritis of the hip joint. Arthritis of the hip joint causes pain in hip and in knee.

In order to relieve pain I recommend you to follow these guidelines:
1. Lose weight.
2. Limit your activities. Avoid long walking or other physical exercises, because they aggravate arthritis.
3. Anti inflammatory non steroidal medicines are recommended, too.

However you need a diagnosis to get the right treatment.
To determine the diagnosis you need:
1. Pelvic X-ray.
2. Abdominal ultrasound(kidney, uterus and ovarian area).
3. Complete blood count.
4. Urine test.

I recommend you to consult your rheumatologist.

Ask me for anything unclear.

Regards.
Dr. Behar.
