Posted on Sat, 10 Jan 2015
Question: I was diagnosed disk protrusion in L5/S1 compressing in S1 nerve on left side 6 weeks ago.Initially i was having continuous pain in my left buttock but no pain or discomfort in thigh or calf. Doctor advised bed rest and some medicines for 1st 3 weeks and after 3 weeks Pain in buttock was gone but will pain if i walk normally, If some pain occurred it will vanish as soon as i lie down on bed , its then the Doctor advised physiotherapy for next 3 week with some medicines. During this period i started to have some discomfort in my left thigh and calf but it was not pain on the other hand my general condition improved with physiotherapy as i started walking normally without any pain and can now walk 2 km in morning and evening, without any significant pain. Now from last two days i am having pulsating pain in my left calf area and slight discomfort in my thigh but no continuous pain in my buttock. I am worried if my back protrusion is aggravating or improving as symptoms are contradictory.Continuous buttock pain gone but pulsating pain in calf appeared after physiotherapy.

Brief Answer:
Symptoms may fluctuate.

Detailed Answer:
Hi Mr XXXXXXX

Thank you for posting your query.

I have gone through your symptoms and treatment taken so far.

It is common for pain to fluctuate in cases of L5/S1 disc protrusion. There is no need to worry about that.

Common precautions needed are- avoid lifting heavy weights and avoid forward bending.

Physiotherapy should be continued.

Medications such as pregabalin or gabapentin capsules may help in relieving nerve pain.

With these measures, about 80-90% people get better. In the remaining, epidural injections and surgery may be needed.

I hope my reply has helped you.

I would be pleased to answer, if you have any follow up queries or if you require any further information.
