Brief Answer:
Can be due to a fracture.

Detailed Answer:
Hello,
Thanks for posting your query.

The presence of pain and swelling in the lower back can be due to a minor fracture or a muscle tear in the area. To detect the cause, MRI scan is the best investigation. X-ray may not pick up a soft tissue injury.

Since the back is painful, it is best to lie down straight and avoid walking till the pain subsides. Taking pain killers and muscle relaxants will help. Do consult an orthopedic surgeon for proper investigations.
I hope this answers your query.
