Question: Hello- I have a 5 year old daughter who is having some type of bowel stomach issue- since Sunday she has had an issue going the bathroom- she has been going nickel size soft and mucous stools which are very light in color. My major concern is that I am seeing blood in the stool and mucous blood as well. She has been going potty 10 or so times a day like this. It feels like she has to go more or something but she can't pass it. The blood is light but die not seem like it is from a tear or hemmroids. Her pediatrician feels it is a bug but she displays no other stomach bug symptoms. She is full of every, no fever and had an appetite. We have limited her food per dr request but not let up as of yet . Sometimes her bm are worm like as well. Her pediatrician took for still samples which took 6 bm to fill the tiny bottles since it's only that amount coming out. She cries when she goes potty like stomach cramping / do you have any insight on what this could be?

Brief Answer: .... Detailed Answer: Hi there, Thanks for writing in... The possibilities I can think of are: gastroenteritis, amoebic or bacillary dysentery. These are the common causes in children. Some cases of bacillary dysentery are self limiting and get better in a weeks time. I would wait for the stool report which might show the causative agent . Then based on the report ,the paediatrician might start her on antibiotics or anti protozoals. In the meantime I would advise you to give her ORS(oral rehydration solution), Rice gruel with a pinch of salt, tender coconut water etc . That will replace her fluids and electrolytes. Probiotics like lactobacilli might help. Maintain good food hygiene like washing hands with soap before preparing food, before eating , after using the bathroom.etc. Hope this information was helpful to you. Regards, Dr. Divya Kuttikrishnan
