Suggest Treatment For Mild Aortic Regurgitation

Question:

Hello. I was recently diagnosed with moderate aortic regurgitation. Per echocardiogram.(also mild mytral valve regurgitation)

I requested the echo due to some transient shortness of breath and weakness ONLY during exertion. ( minor tasks like carrying groceries, reaching for things on shelf, or tying shoes and then standing back up. )
I was referred to cardiologist but not until appt 2/13.

Also prior i had an ecg that showed first degree av block.

I am a bit confused about it!

(The echocardiogram showed no enlargement. )is this a wait and Is this a wait and see situation? . I have little interest in going out etc as i am most comfort relaxing in my home. I feel totally fine and think im being a hypochondriac until i get short of breath and muscle weakness.
Why have symptoms when the stage is fairly mild?

Why have symptoms when the stage is fairly moderate with no heart enlargment etc.
Would the mild av block be a factor??

Your feedback is appreciated

Recently diagnosed with moderate aortic regurgitation and ( mild mytral regurgitation) i requested echocardiogram due to shortness of breath and leg/arm muscle fatigue. Only happens upon exertion. ( household minor chores like making bed, putting things on upper shelf, bending down to clean something.)
Also ecg showed first degree av block.

I have mild stage 2 kidney disease. Echo showed no abnormalities in heart size etc.

Wondering what u think- cardio dr not until feb 13

It seems my symptoms are a bit extreme for this stage

Brief Answer:
Until this moment, nothing to be worried

Detailed Answer:
Greetings and welcome to HealthcareMagic. Thank you for your question. I understand your concern.

As you may know, every field in medicine has specific protocols.

Now, let us take things one by one.

A mild mitral regurgitation is a phenomenon that does not generate any clinical symptoms and may be like this for decades, so there is nothing you should be worried about regarding this.

The first degree atrio-ventricular block also may be present in individuals since birth, and no problems come from that matter, as long as it does not produce clinical symptoms, such as fainting with a total non-recall situation presented by the patient.

And last, but most importantly, it's not harmful if kept under observation, the moderate aortic regurgitation. This is a condition when there is a moderate reflow from the aorta to the left ventricle in every heart beat, but, as long as it does not propagate to severe regurgitation, it is kept, as our indications refer, to a level where it should be measured once in six months by echo cardiography.

At the moment, I would recommend you to continue your everyday activity, but vigorous physical activity should be withheld.

I hope I was helpful with my answer. I am happy to help if you have any follow-up questions.

Best regards,
Dr. Meriton

Hello Dr. Meriton,

Thank you for your feedback. Th info is helpful and my understanding as yiu indicated,is that patients rarely need intervention unless the aortic insufficiency is severe. ( even asymptotic patients)
This is where my confusion lies. I do not know what the next step is if a patient is. symptomatic like myself tho echo indicates moderate disease.
In fact my exhaustion and shortness of breath seems to be worsening over the past few days
Is it rare to treat an individual with my symptoms at this stage? Im wondering if the dr will suggest an exercise echo.
I have to lie down after a short period of time after mild exertion. Today arms and legs very heavy and and weak until i lay down
I know i cant carry on my "normal" activities if these symptoms persist
Perhaps i am an atypical case?
Sorry so long. Any thoughts appreciated
(My email is YYYY@YYYY
The prior one given to you was an error!
Thank you again
Nancy.

Brief Answer:
May be a diuretic added to the therapy

Detailed Answer:
Hello again and welcome back.

Well, as I suggested in the previous answer, the rule of thumb is to keep the moderate regurgitation under 6-monthly or yearly exam with an echo cardiography, to see if there is any progression of the aortic condition whatsoever.

Of course, there are atypical cases, and the symptoms may have been generated by it.

However, I can see you have an appointment with a local cardiologist after ten days, may be there is a need for a diuretic to be added in the therapy, which you can discuss with the local cardiologist.

I hope I was helpful with my follow-up.

Best regards,
Dr. Meriton
