Question: Hi Doctor,
My 17 year old son has a lump in his neck below his right ear and slightly to the back. It is about an inch long and oval shaped (sort of). It is only on the one side. He said there is a little stiffness or discomfort moving his head to the right. Does it sound serious? He has recently had a cold and cough.

Brief Answer:
It is probably a lymph node swelling due to the cold.

Detailed Answer:
Hello Mam.
It is fairly normal to have a cervical lymph node enlargement after a bout of cough and cold. It is a swollen lymph node. There is no need to worry about it. He just needs a course of antibiotics and the swelling will slowly subside. The infection will be cured in a few days but the swelling will take a few weeks to come down.
I usually prescribe my patients Tab Ceftum (cefuroxime) 500mg twice a day along with Tab Combiflam (ibuprofen) and Tab Ranitidine both twice a day. This regime I advice for 5 to 7 days and patients respond well to this.
You can let me know if there are other concerns.
Take care.
