Suggest Treatment For Loose Motions

Posted on Tue, 30 Sep 2014
Question: My LO is 6 months old and having loose motions from couple of days. She was comfortable taking rice cereal and similac advance till now. However, I started ragi cereal (First bites) to her 2 days back and this could have been the cause for her loose motions. Also since she was not liking the taste of Similac, i also tried dexolac premium 2. Can you please suggest the next course of action to get her back to normal health?

Brief Answer:
Viral diarrhoea

Detailed Answer:
Hi...this seems like a viral diarrhoea.
Unless the kid's having low urine output or very dull or excessively sleepy or blood in motion or green bilious vomiting...you need not worry.
I suggest you use zinc supplements (Z&D drops 1ml once daily for 14 days) & ORS (Each small packet mixed in 200ml of potable water and keep giving sip by sip) as hydration is very important and crucial part of treatment. If there is vomiting you can use Syrup Ondansetron as prescribed by your paediatrician as it is a prescription drug.

What should be the ideal diet for the baby now? Can she continue taking Dexolac premium 2 or should i shift back to similac advance 2? She has low urine output and mucus in stools.

Brief Answer:
Suggestions on diarrhea

Detailed Answer:
Hi...coming to your queries -
1. You can give any rice based feeds like Nestum rice or Cerelac rice or mashed soft rice and dal too.
2. No need to shift to similac as she is not liking it. Continue with Dexolac... Its good.
3. Even though there is low urine output... If she's active she will definitely get better.

In this age diarrhea could also be because the kids keep everything in mouth. Once diarrhea starts it will be there for 5-7 days.
