Posted on Mon, 3 Aug 2015
Question: I have developed very large bruises on my legs, specifically my outer thighs and know that I have not injured those areas. In addition two red lines have developed beneath one of the set of the bruises. Is this something I should be concerned about, or just monitor?

Brief Answer:
You need to check for altered blood coagulation.

Detailed Answer:
Hi,
Welcome to health care magic,
I have seen the pictures that you uploaded.

These bruises are likely to be having subcutaneous petechial haemorrhages which are actually tiny haemorrhages that occur in skin giving rise to bruise like appearance.

Normally, we don't get this kind of bruises as our coagulation of blood is regulated and any alteration in this can cause bleeding inside skin even on usual pressure on the skin.

In this bruises, I would suggest you to get bleeding time (BT) and Prothrombin time (PT with INR) tested to check out the coagulation status of your blood.

There are various causes for this ( For example Thrombocytopenia, bleeding, factor deficiency, septicaemia, etc.) but it needs clinical examinations and blood investigations to find out the actual cause.

It would be advisable to to get this symptoms evaluated by a doctor (preferably physician) who can guide about the investigations.

Here, complete medical evaluation is needed as there is always fear of internal bleed. So, your doctor might give you shot of vitamin K which can prevent such bleeds.

Hope this will help you and ask if you want me to explain anything.
Take care.
