Suggest Treatment For Knee Pain

default
Posted on Mon, 7 Dec 2015
Question: My mother just went to the ER. She has been saying for awhile that she feels like she has a rubber band around her knee and it hurts really bad below the knee. She has also been complaining about XXXXXXX horses in the calf and foot. I don't know if it's related, but she often has complaints of being light-headed or dizzy. I have been worried about her, but she is too stubborn to go to the doctor. She has also been tracking her blood sugar and it is often higher than normal, but I fear she has been too stubborn to ask the doctor about it. Any idea what is going on?

Brief Answer:
I do believe there is at least 1 underlying abnormality

Detailed Answer:
Hello and welcome.

Thank you for writing to us.

I have gone through your query with diligence and would like you to know that I am here to help. Based on the information provided, I do feel the following are prevalent:

+Lowered or reduced blood circulation to her lower limbs: Which can cause pain that she is experiencing, and also reduced sensation which the doctor observed

In such a scenario, we should go about the following investigations:

-Doppler ultrasound of her lower limbs to check on circulation
-Blood coagulation profile
-HbA1c (along with a glucose profile): Poor blood sugar control can also result in poor circulation and also poor health of the lower limbs
-Lipid profile
-Cardiac profile: To check if the heart is functioning well enough, because if it is not then it can result in reduced blood flow to the peripheries (e.g. legs)
-Nutritional deficiencies (e.g. vitamin B12 deficiency) can result in poor blood circulation

+Possible skeletal changes in her knee and/or hip joint: Requiring X-rays to confirm/rule out

+Maneuver to check on her knee ligament health

+Poor diabetic control

I really hope her approach to the doctor will help provide us with answers, because all of the possibilities I have listed only get worse with time. There is a time to be stubborn for your own well being, and a time to be wise for your own well being. I hope we can help her with helping herself.

Please also do not hesitate to write to me about anything, I am always here to help.

Best wishes.
