Question: Hi, I felt bottom itching for a month so I saw the doctor in NHS Walk in centre yesterday she said she can't see anything on my anus, but recommeded me took one tablet of Mebendazole yesterday afternoon. So I took one. Now I am really worried that I can see a whole thread worm when I poop, is it going to be broken in very tiny pieces or I will see whole dead worms in my poop? I know this is a bit embarrasing but pls answer the question for me! Thank you doctor.

Brief Answer:
Possible small threadworms, but not as you think...

Detailed Answer:
Hi,

I understand your concern.

Itchiness in your bottom could be due to intestinal parasites when no problem is noted with your skin at that place.

This explains why your doctor gave an unique dose of mebendazole. Usually, I ask my patients to run stool testing for ova, parasites before prescribing medications.

If you took mebendazole, it does not mean you are going to see scary parasites. Not at all. What I suspect are tiny parasites (threadworms) larvae that you might see when passing stool.

If so, might need another dose of mebendazole after 2 weeks.

Take some probiotics to stabilize intestinal flora as you might feel light abdominal cramps /discomfort the next couple of days.

However, I can assure nothing worrisome will happen.

Wishing you a fast recovery.
