Posted on Tue, 2 Feb 2016
Question: I am 67 years old. I have irritation on the outside of my eyelids. They itch. This has been a recurring issue. What are the possible causes of the itching? What can I use to sooth or eliminate the itch? I also have the same sensitivity where my glasses sit on my ears.

Brief Answer:
Mostly allergic.

Detailed Answer:
Hello
Welcome to Health care magic

I have read your query and understand the concern.

These symptoms of recurrent irritation and itching over the eyelids could be indicative of a probable allergic blepharitis which is inflammation from either infection of the eye lashes or allergic reaction to something in your environment.

The treatment for both will be more or less same which requires treatment by the use of anti-allergic drugs or topical soothing lotion if itching is not severe.

Also, your ear skin sensitivity could also be related to eczema but I will need to see the skin of the affected area (of eye lids and ear both) to arrive at a certain conclusion and will guide you accordingly.

For eyelid itching,I would recommend something called eyelash washes or scrubs. You should use Diluted Johnson’s baby shampoo and then scrub your eyelids with the shampoo by the help of a cotton tip applicator after soaking it with this solution.

Gently message the eyelid margin with the cotton tip applicator for 1 or 2 minutes which will help to remove debris for infection and allergy.

But I will not recommend using steroids (cortizone) on the eye lids due to proximity to the eye and the effect of steroids on the eye.

Before going into further discussion, kindly provide me clinical picture of the both areas to confirm the diagnosis.

Brief Answer:
Looks likely to be Eczema

Detailed Answer:
Hi, Welcome back to HCM.
Thanks for sharing picture.

It looks to be a more eczema after going through your picture.

So,you will also require oral antihistamines with steroids for which you will require prescription from some local doctor or your family physician.

However, you may continue to apply topical soothing lotion (lubridem) or diluted baby shampoo for symptommatic relief.

Let me know if there's any further queries in this regard
