Question: Caught finger in car door 12/22/15.. 2 stitches. Had intense pain when finger came alive. Now area hard, deeply painful, and swollen. Is this scar tissue? No s/s infection unless there is an abscess under neath. Will this get better on its own or will an I&D be necessary. Do not want osteo.

Brief Answer:
Please watch for signs of worsening and probable infection

Detailed Answer:
Hi xxxxxxxxxxxxx,
Thanks for writing in to us.

I have read through your query in detail.
Please find my observations below.

1. Sorry to hear about the injury to your finger and hope it is healing well.

2. It will help to see a picture of the finger as of today to know if there is any sign of continuing inflammation or an abscess developing below the stitches.

3. If a picture cannot be made available then please watch out for the following
(i) increase in swelling and worsening of the pain over the next 24 - 48 hours
(ii) any pus coming out from the healing wound in the area of the stitches
(iii) painful restriction of movements involving the finger.

4. It is not clear if you were prescribed antibiotics following your injury to prevent infection. You can apply antiseptic ointment like neosporin over the wound and take over the counter oral pain relief medicines to control pain.

5. In conclusion, the above points are to be watched for and if there is increase in swelling, pain and any pus then then an infection or abscess is to be considered and please consult your doctor over the next 24 - 48 hours.

Hope your query is answered.
Please do write back if you have any doubts.
