default
Posted on Fri, 3 Feb 2017
Question: I am taking exemestane i hope i spelled it right , for breast cancer. It is causing insomnia. I dont want to stop taking it as any of the other estrogen blockers can cause the same side effect. The question is, if i take exemestane after i eat dinner around six or seven oclock, will it be less likely to cause insomnia.

Brief Answer:
no it may not work like that

Detailed Answer:
Hi
Thanks for your query. I understand your concern.

However, the mechanism for insomnia does not work like that. The time of taking exemestane will not change the insomnia severity. But no harm in trying that. Time of taking exemestane would not effect its efficacy as well.

I would suggest some non-pharmacologic interventions like avoiding caffeine and nicotine, especially late in the day. Avoiding exercise during the four hours before bedtime; daily exercise is beneficial to sleep, but can interfere if done close to bedtime. Avoid large meals in the evening. Avoid taking naps.
Keep the bedroom at a comfortable temperature. Make the bedroom as dark as possible. Set aside a time to relax before bed and use relaxation techniques. For example, imagine a peaceful environment and comforting body sensations, such as warmth and heaviness in the limbs, warmth in the upper abdomen, and coolness on the forehead.

If these don't work, a low dose sedative should be okay.

Hope this helps.
Regards
