If it is associated with infection I recommend my patients to take a course of oral and topical antibiotics.
Once the infection settles I recommend them to go for nail avulsion followed by chemical cauterisation.
This is an office procedure done by a dermatologist.
Besides this I recommend them to avoid ill fitting footwear and clip the nails straight rather than going for curved ones.

I hav e a Dermatologist that I go to regularly and he takes care of cutting my nails. I have had two ingrown toe nails removed, and I am trying to avoid
this procedure again. It is so painful. As my toe is very, very sore, and I dread going thru this again. I asked this question as I thought there might be a medication to relieve it. Do I need a prescription for the oral or topical antibiotics ? I will go do not return to go back to him until April. I know if
I call him he will just surgerically remove it.

I understand your concern but to avoid recurrence nail avulsion should be followed by chemical cauterisation of the nail matrix.
