Suggest Treatment For Inflamed Sore On The Knee

default
Posted on Mon, 17 Oct 2016
Question: Outside upper right of right knee very inflamed & sore. Visibly swollen. Walking is possible, but hurts a bit.. Yesterday I did intense kicking into a padded shield as part of a Krav Maga self defense class. Do I wait this out a couple of days, or go right in to see a doctor? (I should add that I'm not over weight, in good shape and teach 10 yoga classes per week. Help!)

Brief Answer:
Consult an orthopedic surgeon to exclude more severe joint injury.

Detailed Answer:
Hi Barefootgirl,
Thanks for the query under Health care magic. I have read it & understand your concern.
Looking at the symptoms you have ( pain & swelling in right knee joint with minimal pain while walking )...You seem to have excessive stress to joint while the vigorous kicking..... Knee swelling in such the circumstances are mostly due to overstretch / tearing/ sprain of patellofemoral ligament / swelling of the quadriceps tendon... which mostly can be managed with home care ( comprising of complete rest to the knee with raising ,hot or cold packs, anti inflammatory pills over the counter like Ibuprofen till the swelling & pain goes followed by physiotherapy under expert care )
* Still your profession demanding frequent & strenuous use of knee( with a meniscus tear in left knee in past,) your age nearing sixties .. I would suggest a consultation of an Orthopedic surgeon..to exclude any other severe involvement of the joint. He may advise for investigations like X ray/ CT scan or MRI as per need & will guide you for best management of the problem.
Till you can get an appointment, you can proceed with home care..but earliest consultation would prevent possible complications...& enable you to lead a active & healthy life in future too !
I hope the answer is helpful to you. Any follow up query you have, please don't hesitate to ask. I would be happy to help.
Thanks.
