Question: My wife is 59. Since Monday the 30th she has suffered with diarrhea which I would say was moderate to severe. Very light colored stool, burping, fatigue, random chills. My 4 year old grand son has the same symptoms. She had him over the weekend prior to getting the same thing. could be source. Qwezy stomach but no vomiting. Found out this is going around as other friends have had this same thing. Only treatment to date id plenty of fluids and rest. She cant rest because of the diarrhea. Any ideas??

Brief Answer:
Take care to avoid dehydration

Detailed Answer:
Hello,
Welcome and thanks for your query.
It is an infectious diarrhea and most often is a viral infection. The viral infections are usually self limiting but it is very important that she doesn't get dehydrated. Oral replacement solution (ORS ) is available OTC and contains glucose and the electrolytes that are lost in the diarrheal fluid. Soups, juices, tea with honey and other fluids can be drunk in addition. She should have more than two litres of fluids depending on the amount passed.
If there is no significant fever or blood in the stools, this along with OTC anti diarrheal medicines like Imodium is sufficient.
If it gets worse with vomiting, she would require to have iv fluids with electrolytes lost due to diarrhea. If the blood and stool tests are indicative of a bacterial infection, she would require antibiotics also.
Wish she would get well soon.
