Suggest Treatment For Indigestion, Nausea And Abdominal Bloating

default
Posted on Fri, 21 Aug 2015
Question: Dr Rynne,
i have had symptoms of indigestion, gas, stomach rumbling, some nausea, and having to go to the bathroom quite frenquently but can't seem to have it pass through. Feels like my stomach is bloated at times. Started this past Sunday in am (extreme vomiting), had fish that evening, so not sure if its a stomach virus or what. Never had any health issues (GERD, Acid Reflux, etc.) or had symptoms like this ever before. Background on me ( 38, just retired Elite Pro Triathlete).
Any recommendations on remedy?

Brief Answer:
probiotics, fluids, hold off solid food till 4 hour window with no symptoms

Detailed Answer:
HI, thanks for using healthcare magic

Bloating, nausea, vomiting and diarrhea are commonly related to bacterial or viral infection of the gastrointestinal tract.

Viral infection tends to be more common than bacterial infection but treated essentially the same way.

It can take 7 to 10 days for improvement to occur but this can sometimes be shortened by the use of probiotics. Probiotics help to restore the normal state of the colon and in this way, they are useful in diarrhea, vomiting.

There are medications that can help with the nausea, vomiting if this is still occurring eg dramamine or peptobismol

In addition, only liquids should be used until there is a 4 hour window with no symptoms.
Fluids would prevent or treat dehydration . Oral rehydration fluids or sport drinks should be used because they would give back both fluid and electrolytes that you may be using.

After there have been no symptoms for 4 hours, then you can start with small portions of dry foods and increase the amounts if tolerated.

Summary: (1)probiotics
(2)hold off solid food till 4 hour window with no symptoms
(3)use fluids with electrolytes
(4)peptobismol or dramamine would help with nausea, vomiting

Peptobismol would also help with bloating, diarrhea

I hope this helps, feel free to ask any other questions

Brief Answer:
either in a yogurt or on its own

Detailed Answer:
Hi

You can either use yogurts with probiotics (Eg original yoplait, activa or most greek yogurts) or can use plain probiotics such as culturelle, GNC, align

These would help the symptoms mentioned.
