Question: Hi' I have a large hernia, a surgeron told me it is a big risk at my age, I am an 88 year old female. What does a hernia really look like? Mine doesn't hurt, BUT it lets me know it's there, I had a twisted colon over a year ago, they took 18 inches of my colon. I have swollen quite a bit, but I know paet of it is from eating wrong foods, I was down to 107 lbs. and now I am 130 lbs.

Brief Answer:
It looks like Incisional hernia.

Detailed Answer:
Hi
As per your description, it looks like Incisional hernia.
Hernia is protrusion of abdominal content like bowel or Omentum ( abdominal fat ) outside through a opening.
As you got operated previously, there is a chance of suture breakdown in the inner layers leading to hernia.
There is no medical treatment for this.
Only Surgery has to be done.
As you are 88,any surgery will carry some risk.
If you develop distension of abdomen, vomiting and constipation, you should go for surgery as there is chances of bowel obstruction.
Otherwise, you can manage with abdominal belt.
This is what I advice to my patients too.
Hope I answered your query. If you have any questions, I will clarify further.
Wish you good health.
Regards
