Suggest Treatment For Hives And Sore Throat While On Benadryl

Posted on Fri, 29 Jan 2016
Question: This has been a rough go for my wife. She has had continued Uti symptoms for around 2 weeks and is seeing a urologist.
Another difficulty popped up last night around 9:30pm.
She started having anaphylaxis to the antibiotic (cipro). It was her second pill.
Hives, throat felt like she couldnt swallow.
Benadryl and single dose of epi and steroid got it under control at ER and after about an hour DR just observed her. She was released in the morning around 7:00am.
Mu question is, Its been almost 24 hours since her reaction and she says she feels fine but just a minor sore throat feeling in the esophagus. She is eating and drinking and she feels no tightness and has no hives. Shes remained unchanged for 3-4 hours(about how long shes been awake).

We have epi pen on hand and she just took her first oral dose of steroid(we got home at 7:00am this morning so she slept all day).
Shes on benadryl 50mg every 6 hrs.
Question: Is this normal to feel some irritation the following day. Again she says she doesnt feel like she did when she had the reaction but we want to be safe.
Thanks

Brief Answer:
It's normal.

Detailed Answer:
Hi

Thanks for posting your query.

I went through your query and I can understand your concern.

Well it is pretty much normal for some persisting soarness in throat after an anaphylactic reaction.

As long as she is on steroid and benadryl there is no need to worry. The soreness will resolve in a day or two.

But I hope she had stopped taking Cipro.

Hope this information was useful to you.
Any clarification feel free to ask.

Regards.

Yes, stopped cipro.
She started on bactrim which made her itch. So then she was put on macrobid (5 days)and then put on cipro because urgency to urinate remained. Shes never had an issue with antibiotics but should she see an immunologist to prevent any future reactions or do you think its just coincidence that she was sensetive to 2 of the antibiotics.
The ER Dr did say sulphas and cipro often cause issues. Were trying to get a game plan for monday on how to proceed. Thanks

Brief Answer:
It could be Coincidence.

Detailed Answer:
HI

Thanks for the information.

I just feel this is a Coincidence . But a reaction to antibiotic that was Anaphylaxis requiring Epi does warrant a consult with Immunologist . Because it is better to test for other medication for which she might be Allergic.

Hope this helps you and her.

Any clarification feel free to ask .

Regards.
