Suggest Treatment For High Fever And Red Sores On The Lips

Question: Hello doctor, I Have 4yrs old kid.Fever started on 01/09/2016 and we went to a pedeatric and doctor told it is a viral fever and he advised the below medicine. fever is coming like ups and down and also we noticed that from yesterday his lips are become red and small small red spots are there in his tongue and we are worried about that.kindly please advice..

Hi...Thank you for consulting in Health Care magic.

Fever of few days without any localizing signs could as well a viral illness. Usually rather than fever, what is more important is the activity of the child, in between 2 fever episodes on the same day. If the kid is active and playing around when there is no fever, it is probably viral illness and it doesn't require antibiotics at all.

Once viral fever comes it will there for 4-7 days. So do not worry about duration if the kid is active.

Paracetamol can be given in the dose of 15mg/kg/dose (maximum ceiling dose of 500mg) every 4-6th hourly that too only if fever is more than 100F. I suggest not using combination medicines for fever, especially with Paracetamol.

Meftal-P contains Mefenamic acid which is a NSAID. It carries the risk of gastritis and renal problems in the long run. Please do not use Meftal-P.

Please do not cover the kid, it will delay decrease of temperature.

Thank u so much sir.. how about the lips they have become red and there is a small red spots on the tongue.. we an also find some small rashes on the eye lids.. please advice

Hi... this is also quite common in viral illness. If the kid is active and passing urine well you need not worry. But skin conditions and rashes are best diagnosed only after seeing them directly. I suggest you upload the images of eyelids, tongue and lips, I will see and get back to you.

I have seen the images. These are the possibilities and suggestions. The tongue looks like strawberry tongue.

1. Scarlet fever - I suggest you see your pediatrician and get a rapid streptococcal antigen test done. If it is positive then your kid will require antibiotics. If it is negative then it might be viral illness and doesn't require antibiotics at all.

2. Kawasaki disease - Today is 4th day of fever. Wait another 2 days and if the fever doesn't settle in 48 hours, I suggest you get back to your pediatrician and get basic blood work up and N echocardiogram done.

3. Viral illness - It could still be viral infection. If the kid is otherwise active and fever is settled, don't worry.
