Brief Answer:
Lifestyle modification may be practised

Detailed Answer:
Hi XXXX
Thanks for writing in to us.

High blood pressure must be tried and controlled at less than 140/ 90 mm Hg in an adult like your husband. A patient is diagnosed to be suffering from high blood pressure if there is blood pressure more than 140/ 90 mm Hg recorded on 3 consecutive days. The blood pressure must be recorded after at least 30 minutes of rest and in the same position, by the same person and using the same instrument which must be calibrated.

The first thing I would like to know is if your husband reports a high BP even when recorded after 30 minutes of rest at home. This is important as some individuals repeatedly record a falsely high BP in the doctors clinic and this is called white coat hypertension.

Although the details of medication are not mentioned in your query, certain life style modifications may be incorporated in to his daily routine as following:
1. Include healthy diet.
2. Limit salt intake in foods (no extra salt).
3. Maintain fitness and control your weight.
4. Control alcohol intake and stop smoking.
5. Manage stress and practice relaxation techniques in breathing.
6. Monitor your blood pressure at home using a digital BP monitor and record after at least 30 minutes of rest.
7. Control anger.

Hope your query is answered.
Do write back if you have any doubts.

Regards,
Dr.Vivek
