Suggest Treatment For High BP Despite Taking Medications

default
Posted on Thu, 13 Aug 2015
Question: Despite taking medicines for hypertension, BP of my father, who is 74 years old, went to 190/50.
Doctor prescribed the following medicines: Amlodac (5) x 2, Concorcor (2.5), inditel (80), Dytor (10) and Loprin (75). The BP has reduced to 150/60 in the last 12 days, but excessive swelling of both the legs have been observed during this period. How should the medicines be adjusted to help reduce the swelling ? Can he switch to some other medicine in place of Amlodac ? Amplodipine tends to cause swelling in his legs, as was previously observed some 5 years ago.
He is also taking Glycomet SR 1gm x 2 and GP-2 for his diabetes.

Brief Answer:
Losartan or olmesartan group of drug can be prescribed in place of Amlodac

Detailed Answer:
Hello
I really appreciate your concern for your father
You are right, Amlodac causes swelling in legs.
If it is too much and unbearable than you can ask his doctor for Losartan or olmesartan group of drugs

Here I would like further information to guide you better as
Since how long he is taking Amlodac?
His weight and built

Apart from drugs I would advise him for certain life style modifications like
Salt restricted or low salt and low fat diet.
Lot of fresh fruits and leafy vegetables,
Exercises as much he can comfortably do like brisk walking and aerobics
Yoga and meditation will help him to reduce stress and anxiety.
Complete abstinence of alcohol or smoking

Please feel free to ask for follow up questions or you have any further queries, I will be happy to help you
Best wishes

He is taking Amlodac (5mg) BD since 10/7/2015. Swelling started gradually from 15/7/15 and now, on 24/7/15 it has become unbearable.

In May, 2015 he was asked to take Amplodipine (5mg), but he stopped taking the same after few days due to swelling in legs.

Around 5 years back, he was prescribed Amplodipine, but he had to switch to some other medicine because of swelling of the legs.

My father is reasonably well built (height 5 feet 6 inches) and his weight is about 59 Kgs. He doesn't smoke or drink.

Also, he is already taking inditel 80 (telmisartan). Isn't this similar to Losartan or olmesartan group of drug ?

regards,

Brief Answer:
Please consider these guidelines

Detailed Answer:
Hello
Welcome again and thanks for all the details.
Telmisartan, losartan and olmesartan are same group of drugs.

You can discuss with his doctor about diuretic group of drugs like indapemide (Natrilix SR) or hydrochlorthiazide.

I hope with these drug and life style modifications as I have advised in previous reply, his problem will be addressed.

Thanks for your question
wishing him good health.
Regards
