Question: I have just been told I have a hiatal hernia the size of my fist. Is that large? I will see the doctor after the biopsy results are back.

Brief Answer:
Its a medium hernia. But the size is not most important.

Detailed Answer:
Hello!

Thank you for the query.

This is not very big hernia and its not small either. We can say it is a medium hernia. But not the size of this issue is most important. Hiatal hernia can be large and if it does not cause any symptoms or symptoms are mild, no treatment is necessary.
Only if the symptoms are very intense, antiacid medicines do not work, hernia treatment is necessary. The treatment can be done with a laparoscopy. It is called fundoplication (hernia is literally stitched to the diaphragm). This procedure is very effective and can set free from any hiatal hernia symptoms.

Hope this will help. Feel free to ask further questions.
Regards.
