Question: Hello, I found out that I have Herpes Type 1 in the genital region in December 2015. I had multiple outbreaks since then so from the recommendation of a doctor, I started taking daily 500 mg of Valtrex ( Valacylovir ). I take it at the same time everyday. Two days ago I started noticing symptoms of an outbreak even though I'm taking the suppression medication. What should I do?

Brief Answer:
increase to 500mg twice daily

Detailed Answer:
HI, thanks for using healthcare magic

Suppressive therapy is normally 1 g ( two 500mg tablets) if the persons immune system is intact (not on steroids or other immune suppressing drugs, no history of HIV or other conditions affecting immune system).
500mg daily is used if the immune system is impaired.

Treatment of an attack is 500mg twice daily.

Since you are currently using 500mg once a day, you can go up to twice daily which is the treatment dose.

You may want to speak to your doctor about the suppressive dose.

I hope this helps, feel free to ask any other questions
