Question: Experiencing diffuse hair loss. Noticing throughout head not patchy. Every time I shampoo or comb my hair I feel like I am going to go bald. History of Hypothyroid and Epilepsy. Take levothyroxine and Dilantin. Had a full panel of labs cbc, tsh, fasting glucose, testosterone, dhea, lh, fsh, iron, iron binding capacity, iron saturation, ferritin. CBC is unremarkable(ICU rn.) TSH 2.25, glucose 100. Iron 154(range 50-170), Iron binding capacity 247 (265-497 range), iron saturation 62(6-51 range) ferritin(range 21.81-274.77.) I have read that low Ferritin can cause hair loss as I am experiencing. Is that true, and what treatment options are available. Thank you so much!
Other labs are pending.

Should respond well to treatment

Detailed Answer:
Hi

Welcome to this site!

I have noted your details and am of the view that you are experiencing a condition that can be managed. Most often the cause of the problem remains obscure despite investigations.

To my patients having similar complaints and falling in your age group, i recommend following measures:

1 Be gentle on hairs, brush them with wide toothed comb but refrain from massage. Be more careful when the hairs are wet.

2 Go for diet rich in proteins and green vegs and fruits

3 Try to lead a stress free life by engaging in hobbies and exercises as suit your temperament

4 Biotin is an excellent oral medication that helps majority patients

5 hair stimulants also knwon as hair tinctures can trigger onset of recovery in many cases.

6 Do not indulge in chemical hair treatments.

Having hypothyroidism and low ferritin do slow down recovery but that should not discourage you at all.

I am sure that if you wait for the results, the outcome will be positive.

Best wishes from our team!

Detailed Answer:
Hi

Welcome back with your query!

Ferritin is basically a carrier and an important one. It definitely can account for hair loss but at the same time there are several other factors that would influence the out come of treatment for hair loss. Studies have repeatedly pointed out the beneficial role of correction of anemia in treating hair loss.

In short, the answer is yes but we must not overlook other factors.

I believe I have put it in simple terms for easy understanding.

Thanks for asking.

Best wishes
