Suggest Treatment For Gestational Diabetes

Question: My wife, who is 29 weeks and 5 days pregnant, was given a dx of gestational diabetes. The results made me question the validity of the dx. She failed her first glucose test with a result of 142, so they reccomended a 3 hour glucose. I know to elevated results normally means GD, but shr only had 1 elevated and 1 slightly lower. Her results were as follows:

FBS = 90 mg/dl (range 65-95)
1 hour = 228 mg/dl (range 65-180)
2 hour = 161 mg/dl (range 65-155)
3 hour = 63 mg/dl (range 65-140) - we were about 10 minutes late on this draw.

We were given A GD diagnosis because she had 2 abnormal results. They said her 1 hour was too high and her 3 hour was too low. I thought for GD two pf the results had to be high. This looks normal to me. What do you think? Can you have GD if your 3 hour was low?

Additional information:
She is an extrememly healthy eater, and she is very fit for a pregnant lady. She has no history of diabetes. She is at risk for pretem and on bed rest for the last few weeks due to a short cervix and positive ffn. This is our first child.

Thank you in advance!

Brief Answer:
2 values above normal. needs diet plan. Repeat sugar levels after a week.

Detailed Answer:
Hi there,
Dr . Purushottm Neurgaonkar welcomes you to HCM VIRTUAL CLINIC. I have gone through your question, and I think I have understood your concern. I will suggest you the best possible treatment options.

1 ) First of all do not panic.

2 ) As you might be aware that now a days, our current urban lifestyle is a major risk factor for various chronic degenerative diseases.
Gestational diabetes is one of them.

3 ) To diagnose and manage various complications of gestational diabetes, various screening tests are advised.
One of them is to take 75 gram glucose and measure blood sugar levels 2 hours after. Results above 140 need further management.

4 ) This can be the reason why her doctor has rightly advised her glucose tolerance test. In her case 1 hour and 2 hour values are on higher side.
I will suggest to get her blood checked for glycosylated hemoglobin. Values above 6 , indicate higher blood sugar levels over last 90 days.

5 ) it is good to note that she doesn't have any past history or family history of diabetes.

I would like to know about her eating pattern and Food habits.
It will be better to have a healthy diet plan .
She can repeat blood sugar levels fasting , and post meals after a week.

It is important to have good sugar control to avoid various complications during pregnancy and delivery and in a newborn child.

Please do not worry. All things will be fine in the due course of time.

I hope this answer helps you. Feel free to ask further
