Question: Hello. About 6 months ago a small red spot developed on my penis just below the head. I went to the doctor and had tests done and they ruled out herpes or any other sexually transmitted infections and suggested it might be a fungal infection. I applied anti fungal/hydrocortisone cream and it cleared up within days. I continued to apply the cream for over a week after it had cleared up and then switched to an anti fungal without hydrocortisone. As soon as I switched to the anti fungal without the steroid it flared up again and two weeks later I tried the same treatment. The hydrocortisone combined with anti fungal got rid of it and I took this cream for two weeks. When I stopped the cream and switched to the anti fungal it flared up again really badly and now it is bigger and very inflamed and raw. Now I also have a similar spot on the head of my penis as well. I went to another doctor and he said it's unlikely to be a fungal infection but is more likely to be dermatitis. He prescribed a stronger steroid cream. I have been reading things online about steroid creams and now I am very concerned (particularly because the sore has gotten larger) that I have caused a problem by using steroid creams in the first place. I have not used any creams for the past two weeks but over the past few months I have probably used the steroid cream twice a day for a total of 4 weeks on and off. Now the sore has gotten larger and very irritated and it doesn't seem to be healing at all. I am very concerned about this. It's extremely itchy and painful and causing me a lot of stress. I am not sure if the symptoms I have now are related to dermatitis/eczema (which I suffer from on other parts of my body from time to time) or if this is now a new problem caused by damaging the skin through the overuse of steroid creams. I have no idea what to do. Please help.
