Suggest Treatment For Frequent Urination During The Night

default
Posted on Sat, 15 Apr 2017
Question: hi, I'm asking for my husband -- his urologist performed a bilateral T U RP ((with button) about 3 mos. ago. Only partially successful, reducing number of times urinating during the night from once every hour or two, down to 2 to 3 times. He has already quit caffeine, reduced fluid intake after dinner, eliminated spicy foods, etc. but still gets up 2-3 times at night. Some background: he is 83, had a triple by-pass in 2012 and then his prostate surgery a few months ago. He was active, athletic until the heart attack. He is not obese, doesn't have sleep apnea. He has always been "in shape" due to 27 years in the military -- when they weren't accepting the physically unqualified. We read about training his bladder to increase time between urinations and will start that, too!
Question: Is there a recommended drug for this? No incontinence is involved. He is on warfarin, a statin, a
very low dose of carvedilol, and 81 mg aspirin once daily. His weight and blood pressure are within normal range (6' and 175 pounds). Is there a "safe" medication he could take before bedtime to relax his bladder. He is totally in control of the bladder during the day! His urologist says his bladder has been "abused" for years with the prostate problem and is still rebelling. He gave us a fairly limited dietary regime, but it's awful. Cheating is inevitable. I gather that potassium is a huge no-no. Please tell me there is a magic little pill!?
Thanks. Peggy

Detailed Answer:
Hello
Thanks for query .

Based on the facts that your husband had Nocturnal frequency for urination due to Enlarged Prostate for which he has undergone endoscopic surgery of TURP and his nocturia has improved to considerable extent .

The nocturnal frequency that he has (2-3 times) is not uncommon .With advancing age there is reduction in capacity of urinary bladder and this is one of the factors for increased frequency for urination and there is little role for medicines to play .

Your Urologist has rightly advised to have bladder training and avoid coffee and water after dinner .

Unfortunately there is no meddicine that can reduce nocturnal frequency .

Hope I have answered your query ,please feel free to ask if you have more questions ,I shall be happy to help you
Thanks and Regards.

Thanks so much for your answer. My husband's urologist gave us a no-no list of foods and liquids that irritate the bladder, so we're following that at probably a 98 % rate. He has been getting up 1 to 2 times per evening, which is definitely an improvement. The urologist said that his bladder can hold enough urine; the problem is that years of straining to put out urine through a resistant, narrowed urethra has developed a habit, and it will take time to re-train the old bladder to return to normal. And this bladder gets finicky only during the night. I've done some research on the Net. There are herbal supplements that "relax" the bladder? Do you know of any such formulation that actually relaxes the bladder, without causing incontinence. That is not one of my husband's symptoms. Do you have any more medical tips? Thanks so much for your time

Brief Answer:
I do not have knowledge about any herbal preparation to relax bladder

Detailed Answer:
Hello
Thanks for follow up .
Awaking twice for urination at night for a man aged 83 years old can be considered to be normal .

As such it takes 8-10 months for bladder in a individual with enlarged prostate to recover after TURP from habit of habitual contraction which is used to have frequent involuntary contraction to overcome the obstruction due to enlarged prostate .

Do not attempt to take too much medications as it it is self limiting and self resolving issue .

Have a patience It will get resolved spontaneously .

Thanks with Regards

Again, thanks so much for your advice. I am now going to watch more closely to ensure that he follows the dietary restrictions 100%, and continues to exercise bladder control during the night. He now gets up once or twice during the evening. He is very disciplined, and will continue with the diet and bladder control for as long as he can stand it. Hope he can help himself faster than the 8-10 month time period you mentioned. I'll tell him "several" months, just to keep him motivated! Thanks so much! We both hate resorting to meds, but Father Time has a way of taking his toll on us, no matter how well we stick to healthy habits. Should you learn anything else about this problem, please let me know. His urologist told us what you wrote to me, so I guess we are in good hands with him.

Thank you so much for your valuable advice!
