Suggest Treatment For Frequent Heart Palpitations

Posted on Fri, 21 Nov 2014
Question: I have frequent heart palpatations. I was recently diagnosed with mild tricuspid regurgitation. My cardiologist told me Im perfectly fine and not to worry. Everytime I drink a drink with alcohol or caffiene I almost instantly feel my heart palpating. Is it safe to drink alcohol and caffiene with mild tricuspid regurgitation? Also my doctor told me I don't need to premedicate for dental treatment. My dentist does not agree. Any advice would me great.

Brief Answer:
Yes, avoid drinking alcohol or caffeine.

Detailed Answer:
Hello,

Yes, avoid drinking alcohol or caffeine , as they stimulate heart leading to palpitation. They might momentarily increase tricuspid regurgitation as well.

I agree with cardiologist about wait and watch approach. There is actually no need of premedication, but if dentist feels taking it, then go ahead , as it is only course of antibiotics that dentist will want you to take.

Please ask if there are doubts.Regards

If I continue to drink caffiene or have alcohol... Am I causing more harm or is it temporary? I drink coffee everyday Alcohol only rarely. Does the tricuspid regurgistion always get worse in time? Or can I go the rest of my life with out the condition getting worse?

Hello,

I am aware of your anxiety about this , but there are no definite answers to these questions.
We cant predict how your triscup valve will function in future, as we dont know over years what kind factors it will be exposed to.So the best option is to avoid exposure to all factors that put stress on it.

Avoiding such factors and regular exercises can help you lead a normal life.
