Posted on Thu, 15 Oct 2015
Question: My kid is 2.8 yrs old & is having frequent fever since last night. It starts with his hands & feet getting cold & then translating into temperature. Last night we administered him crocin which was not helpful & had to give meftal p. This morning he again had fever for which we gave crocin & he responded. He is having running nose & sore throat as well. He is also passing less urine than usual. There was some vomitting this morning.
He has been prescribed crocin/meftal p, atarax (for 6 days). Please suggest incase there needs to be any other remediation & have heard atarax to be given on sos. Is it normal to administer it for 6 days? Thanks

Brief Answer:
Most likely a viral illness

Detailed Answer:
Hi XXXXXXX
Welcome to the HCM

I have gone through your question and understand your concerns. Don't worry. The most common reasons for these complaints in toddlers are self limiting viral infections or bacterial (especially streptococcal) infection.

I would recommend you to go for a throat swab culture to rule out streptococcal infection if the child is running high grade fever spikes along with red, congested, bad sore throat. This is to rule of streptococcal cause for the symptoms as it requires a full course of antibiotics to prevent rheumatic fever in future.

In case, the sore throat is mild with fever less than 102*F, then you may continue with Crocin/ Meftal P along with Atarax. Atarax can be stopped once running nose and sore throat improve. No need to complete 6 days in that case. Most viral illnesses improve in a few days with these medications.

Also, offer warm oral fluids like soups, milk, water regularly with healthy diet to keep him well hydrated.

Syp. Tixylix containing glycerine may be used if irritant cough or sore throat bothers him a lot.

Hopefully this will be useful. I would be happy to help you in any further questions.

Take care
