default
Posted on Mon, 22 Dec 2014
Question: I don't seem to have anything happening to me except I've been coughing for two days, and it got worse before i went to sleep. I started gasping and having large coughing fits often. I haven't shown any other symptoms of any type other than the coughing and my throat isn't even sore. It just feels itchy.

Brief Answer:
post nasal drip most common cause

Detailed Answer:
HI, thanks for using healthcare magic

One of the most common causes of persistent coughing in the absence of other cough and cold symptoms would be post nasal drip.

Rarely a person may not be aware of the drip and present only with symptoms such as coughing.

In addition to the decongestants and anti histamine, you may also need to use a topical nasal spray.

Examples are nasonex, nasocort, rhinocort, flonase

One of these would be able to help with the coughing.

The other causes of abnormal coughing are GERD (reflux). The reflux of the acid can cause coughing that would be worse on laying down and can also be worse on evenings.

I hope this helps, feel free to ask any other questions
