Suggest Treatment For Forgetfulness In An Elderly Person

default
Posted on Thu, 28 Jan 2016
Question: I have difficulty recalling information. It is beginning to worry me since I see it happening quickly. I am 65 but there is no dementia in my family. I am also so irritable and that is really not my style. I am doing yoga 3 times a week, I have not been working for a month and on my way to retiring which is a relief. I used to work very hard long hours as a CFO, I have had two heart attacks, but it has been at least four years since the last one. Maybe, I am just tired.

Brief Answer:
Requires investigation for dementia

Detailed Answer:
Hello,
I have gone through your question and understand your concerns.
Dementia is age related disease commonly but can present earlier also. In such cases investigation are required to search precipitating and risk factors.
You have cardiac illness as one risk factor and increasing age as another.
Are you diabetic, hypertensive, dyslipidemia, any other medical illness, stroke?
You need to first get examined by a neurologist for presence of features of dementia or minimal cognitive impairment.
Blood investigations which should be done are vitamin B12, Thyroid profile, blood sugar, lipid profile, renal and liver function test.
Brain imaging may be done if required after examination.
For dementia many drugs are available like memantine, rivastigmine apart from increased physical and mental exercises.
