Suggest Treatment For Fever, Decreased Appetite And Swelling On Face

default
Posted on Thu, 16 Apr 2015
Question: Hello, my 2 year old ran a fever for 2 days... Highest 100.7, lowered with acetaminophen and ibuprofen. Appetite slightly decreased, but overall eating pretty good and drinking plenty of fluids... Not lethargic but pretty irritable. The fever went away for 24 hours and has since returned, I also found the glands in the jaw/ear area slightly swollen with the return of the fever. He has a runny nose (clear) and a cough that alternates between dry and wet (I believe the cold medicine we gave him - homeopathic - loosened the phlem causing the "wet" cough) on top of all of that he has a rather large tooth attempting to push thru. My concern is that the fever came back along with swollen glands...... I realize swollen glands indicate his body is fighting an infection, other symptoms generally coincide with teething - I'm not a fan of giving my child an antibiotic unless absolutely necessary. Do I take him to the doctor, or just know that as long as he has an appetite, isn't dehydrated, and fever is managed by meds this is something he can kick without antibiotics?

Brief Answer:
Consult your doctor as this may be bacterial infection

Detailed Answer:
Hello

You are right. The most common cause of fever, cough and running nose in this age is viral infection. A viral infection does not need treatment with antibiotic.
Although lymph nodes can enlarged in both viral and bacterial infection, but it is more common in bacterial infection.

As just 1-2 days has been passed, the disease may be in it's initial stage and can progress.Streptococcal infection can also cause upper respiratory infection(Acute tonsillitis/pharyngitis) and early antibiotic treatment is needed in this condition.
Investigation like ASO titre differentiates between the two.

I am not against homeopathic medication but allopathic medicines have much more transparency than homeopathic. In most of the cases the nature of homeopathic medicine is not well known and people blindly use them.

He may need few medication like antiallergic and decongestive to get relieve from cough and cold.Give him antipyratics for fever along with plenty of fluids.
Teething has no direct association with loose stool and fever. It is a myth.
I would suggest you to take your son to the pediatrician for proper evaluation(whether there is any associated lower respiratory findings are there) and then discuss about the medication(whether any antibiotic is need or not).

I would be glad to answer if you have any further query
