Brief Answer:
Please find details below

Detailed Answer:
Hi XXXX,
Thanks for writing in to us.

I have read through your query in detail.
Please find my observations below.

1. Your liver span is measuring 18 cm and is enlarged with moderate fatty changes. The normal liver span is 14.5 cm.

2. There are many causes of liver enlargement with fatty changes as follows
(i) Increased intake of fatty foods and alcohol
(ii) Over weight and obese patients.
(iii) Those who have fatty liver running in family members.
(iv) Any liver condition that is changing appearance of liver.

Keeping in mind the enlarged fatty liver following steps have been suggested.
1. Liver function tests (to know if your liver enzymes are raised)
2. Blood cholesterol level (to know risk of heart disease)
3. Blood glucose level (to know if you have diabetes)

Hope this answers your question. Please feel free to correct any oversight in my interpretation of your problems and discuss them in detail as per your requirements.

Hope your query is answered.
Do write back if you have any doubts.

Is the size too enlarged? I mean is it too dangerous or it can be controlled with proper diet? My cholestrol is high but my sugar levels are normal

Brief Answer:
Liver size depends on body structure, heavy weight people have large liver

Detailed Answer:
Hi XXXX,
Thanks for writing back with an update.

As mentioned earlier, a normal liver measures up to 14. 5 cm. Therefore it is moderately enlarged for you. If you have a heavy body with good height then this is not a serious problem but if you are a slim person then must be further evaluated in detail. If you have any pain in abdomen with or without jaundice or any infection causing liver enlargement then that must be treated.

If your parents and other family members have fatty liver then only dieting will not bring liver to normal but liver can be protected from more damage with diet and good lifestyle. Alcohol intake should be reduced.

Please consult a cardiologist for high cholesterol and take medications to control it. If you eat healthy food and do light exercises regularly then cholesterol level will be under control and risk of heart disease will come down.

Hope your query is answered.
Do write back if you have any doubts.

Regards,
Dr.Vivek
