Question: Hi. I made a mistake and gave my daughther that is 4 years old and weight 40lbs an extra dose of amoxicillin. She has an ear infection and was prescribed only 5 ml every 12 hrs. I gave her 10ml by mistake. She didn't have any reaction but now that i notice I'm worry about what could happen to her. Please advice
Brief Answer:
Do not worry
Detailed Answer:
Hi
Welcome to the HCM
I understand your concerns but don't worry. Amoxicillin is prescribed at 30-60 mg/kg/day in 2-3 divided doses for common ear infections. For some serious infections, we even advice for higher doses up to 90mg/kg/day.
The safe range is wide. Amoxicillin syrups are available in 125mg/5ml and 250mg/5 ml composition. So, for your child 5ml twice daily of Syp. Amoxicillin ( 250mg/5ml) is most appropriate dose for common ear infections.
Giving 1 dose of 10 ml won't affect her at all. So, relax.
Hopefully it will be of help.
Take care
