Posted on Thu, 23 Jun 2016
Question: Good Morning,
I am 61 years old. I have been getting split skin on the edges of my vulva which, because of where they are, take a long time to heal. My family doctor says it is because my body is drying out. She seems unable to suggest somethin I could use to prevent the splitting and what I can use to heal it when it does happen. I do not want to use estrogen cream.
Thank you XXXXXXX

Brief Answer:
Reason why dont you want to use oestrogen

Detailed Answer:
Hi,

You already know the effects of menopause in women. They are horrible sometimes and need ways to tide with the symptoms. One such is the dryness of vagina and vulva walls.
Estrogen cream is very effective and can be used short term without any side effects.
I would also like to know why are you apprehensive about it. IF I can allay your fears about it, I am sure this cream would be helpful temporarily.
Thank you for the opportunity given here.

Since I am only going to get older and dryer with thinner skin, I would prefer having something for the long term. My doctor was so cautionary about the estrogen cream that I would be afraid to use it even for the short term. Is there nothing that will help me?

Brief Answer:
Supplements and moisturizers

Detailed Answer:
Ok I got it.
Please avoid long bubble baths, lotions, scented soaps they can increase the dryness. I suggest to continue premarin. YOu may try these specific moisturizers for genitals like Replens, Lubrin. You can buy at your drugstore. There are water-based lubricant like Astroglide, K-Y which is suggested to use before planned intercourse.
Apart from this Vitamin E supplements, Soy products and Primrose oil supplements may help.

I could not think of standard preparations else.
