Suggest Treatment For Dry Eyes

Posted on Mon, 23 Feb 2015
Question: Hi Doctor,

I have dry eyes. Does this condition generally become worse, over time? Would it be possible for me to still have somewhat healthy eyes, 20 to 50 years from now, or will my eye health and vision deteriorate over time, because of this condition?

Would you recommend that I have laser eye surgery, to close a handful of retinal holes, in each of my eyes?

Also, I've researched the dry eye condition, and have found that a majority of people that acquire this disease are middle-aged to older women. Why would I get this disease?

Finally, my doctor tells me that I should not use Restasis, because it is a "powerful drug." Instead, she is offering punctual plugs. My dry eye condition is fairly bad. Do you agree with her assessment?

Detailed Answer:
Hello
Welcome to Health care magic

I am Dr. DADAPEER K, an Ophthalmologist and I answer health problems related to eye.

I reviewed your history.
It seems from the history that you are having problem of dry eyes.
Dry eyes is commonly seen in females, but it can be seen in both the sexes and in any age group. It occurs because of decreased tear secretions from the glands of the eyelids and the conjunctiva.

This is not a blinding disease and no need to be worried about it.
The initial treatment is by the use of artificial tears and if it is not responding to artificial tears then punctal plugs and topical Restasis can be used.
Some doctors prefer to use Restasis after the use of punctal plugs,no worries.
You can now go for punctal plugs and if it is not responding to it then you can go for restasis eye drops.
Restasis is a commonly used drug and it is very effective no need to be worried that it is a powerful drug.

Hope I have answered your question and the information is helpful to you.

Thank you
With regards
