Suggest Treatment For Dry Eyes And Eye Irritation

Question: Hi. Great service, glad to be able to use it if it actually solves a problem.

I have a bad case of dry-eye as diagnosed by an Ophthalmologist. I say bad because, having spoken to others with the same symptoms, it would appear that mine are more severe: eye irritation, constant blinking, and squinting, and a feeling of fatigued eyes at all times. I have taken a number of drops and gels, but currently use HYLO gel 3 times per day (one drop in each eye each time) and Liposic gel once at night, one drop in each eye. My eyes feel relatively fine in the mornings but get progressively worse as the day goes on.

Currently, this combination of gels keeps the symptoms largely in check, but my eyes are still irritated more or less every day, preventing me from viewing books, TV or computer screens for more than 30 minutes at a time.

Can you tell me if the latest research on treatment for dry-eye offers anything better than these two gels, and if not, might permanent punctal plugs offer better long-term results?

Many thanks,
doctor

Detailed Answer:
Hello dear
Welcome to HCM and thanks for the query
I understand your concern and sorry to hear about your problem.

Do you have any other systemic disease?
Since how long are on the treatment of the dry eye?
Dry eyes could be due to damage to Meibomian glands (usually in meibiominitis: low ocular secretion), ocular surface disorder.
Schirmer's test and tear film study by opthalmologist will help in the diagnosis.
Dry eyes usually take 3-4 months to show complete relief.
Continue to take HYLO gel and LIPOSIC gel.
In addition you can use artificial tear drop 3 times per day.
Washing the eyes regularly with water twice a day.
Use of anti-glare glasses to minimize the exposure to computer screen and TV.
Avoiding the use of air conditioner if possible which will further increase the dryness.

If not responds then tear plug and topical ciclosporin will helpful.

Dr. XXXXXXX Thank you for your suggestions. I have no other systemic eye disease and in fact do not know the cause of my current problems. Can you give me an example of an "artificial tear drop" that you suggest? I will bring up your suggestions with an ophthalmologist, and try to do some more research on the web in the meantime. I had hoped you might be able to provide me with some recent research results on the treatment of dry-eye, and am still not sure if you have or have not. Thank you.
