Posted on Fri, 12 Aug 2016
Question: I had cochlear implant surgery on Wed. July 20. I am having some drainage today. It is a light pink color coming from inside the ear. Is this normal? My doctor is 300 miles away and not in the office this afternoon.

Brief Answer:
Needs assessment by an ENT specialist

Detailed Answer:
Hi! Welcome to health care magic! Thanks for sharing your concerns with us. We will try to help you in best way possible.

First of all, it is sad to know what you had gone through. Based on the history you have shared, it can be leakage of puss or fluid inside the ear through the wound and it would need assessment properly by otoscope and CT scan or MRI of inner ear to locate extent of damage. It also be a sequelae of normal healing but if the discharge is foul smelling or sticky it needs urgent review by an ENT specialist.

Since your surgeon is away then you can get examined by some other ENT specialist in your whereabouts and get a second opinion.

Meanwhile continue oral antibiotics which are usually prescribed post surgically and avoid any drops or topical solutions to be poured into the site.

Wishing you a speedy recovery. If you have any more questions, feel free to ask.
Regards.
