Suggest Treatment For Double Vision Caused By Contact Lenses Usage

default
Posted on Mon, 30 Mar 2015
Question: About eleven years ago I wore monovision contact lenses for several years until my eyes became to dry. I developed diplomia from the monovision. I did not have double vision before using the monovision lenses. I switched to bifocals with prisms about 9 years ago. My double vision without glasses persisted throughout this time. A month ago I got a new prescription for my bifocals which included a slight increase in the prism. Within this past month my double vision has changed; I no longer have double vision without my glasses. Yesterday morning as I woke up I noticed that without my glasses my double vision had returned but within 5 minutes it was gone again. Although I do not have double vision with the new glasses, I have a terrible time reading for more than about 20 minutes with them. My eyes burn and i get headachs. I have returned to my doctor who says that he doesn't know who to improve things. What can I expect with this new eye condition? What can i do?

Brief Answer:
Unfortunately you will experience double vision more often from now on :(

Detailed Answer:
Hello ma'am and welcome.

Thank you for writing to us.

I have gone through your query with diligence and would like you to know that I am here to help. To start off, I would like to mention the causes that can result in diplopia (double vision), for your reference. They are:

+Corneal abnormalities: Scar, dryness, or infections
+Muscle weakness: The muscles of the eye help with movement, and if at all there is any abnormality with them, it can result in diplopia
+Nerve damage: Caused by conditions like diabetes, multiple sclerosis, etc; but if at all this were the cause in your case then you would be displaying other symptoms as well
+Lens issues: Cataracts, but are correctable
+Brain abnormalities: Trauma, aneurysms, stroke, etc.

Now that I have listed that for you I would like you to know that the only condition that could possibly be difficult or impossible to treat from the above listed causes are:

+Scar tissue
+Brain abnormalities
+Muscle weakness
+Dryness which is not being treated or does not respond well to treatment

I have listed and discussed the causes because I need to better understand the cause to be able to more accurately answer your question ma'am. With the above listed possibilities in your case, I strongly suspect poorly responding dryness of eyes to be the cause for your symptoms. And there have been numerous such cases, for which the last resort has been:

+Wearing eye patches
+Wearing prism glasses

As you have already tried the prism glasses and are still experiencing double vision, there are no further treatment options available ma'am, unfortunately. Due to this, you may have to expect and be prepared for double vision to appear more often. The only thing you can do is to be more careful with your daily activities and try your best to go about all the treatment and advise your doctor has for the dry eyes and try your best not to stress.

Unfortunately there is nothing more that can be done in such a circumstance, I am really sorry to inform you about this, but I believe in being honest with my patients and you deserve to know the truth ma'am. I hope you find my response helpful ma'am. Please feel free to write back to me for any further clarifications, I would be more than happy to help.

Best wishes.
