Suggest Treatment For Dizziness And Cough

Question: had a coughing spell last night. I have had a flu or similar "bug" that I would get a throat tickle of phlegm causing me to cough to free it. when I first go it I was also lacking energy for a couple days and have noticed I don't really sweat much. typically when I get a flu I can drink lots of fluids and wear extra clothing going to bed and I "sweat" it out. I typically feel cold when I get the flu. Anyway the coughing has become a few times a day (that's the background), but I will sometimes get a throat restriction where I need to burp a bit to open my breathing and not talk like I am wheezing. Last night when I coughed I seemed to blackout in the chair. My son said I just looked out of it for a bit and then I felt like I just came to and since then my head feels a bit "woozy/ light headed." Not enough to feel dizzy but enough to know it's there. just haven't felt right in the head since.

Brief Answer:
Possibly Vasovagal syncope due to coughing, need to rule out cardiac problems

Detailed Answer:
Hello,
Thank you for trusting HealthcareMagic,

Blacking out after the episode of coughing is likely to be Cough Syncope. It happens due to the stimulation of Vagus nerve, thereby resulting in reduced blood pressure and slow heart rate resulting in syncope/ transient loss of consciousness.

It is a benign condition and does not require any treatment.

However, since this is the first episode and you continue to experience lightheadedness, I would recommend ruling out any cardiac problems to be safe.

Please be advised to follow up with your Primary care Provider to get a 12 lead ECG done and further management accordingly.

Hope I was able to help you
Please feel free to address any further concerns.
