Question: My Dr. feels I have diverticulitis..I also have IBS (for many years). I have been on antibiotics for five days and the pain (lower left side and through to my back..feels like the pain pulsates) is worse not better...no fever...gassy, bloated, nauseated and tired...will the antibiotics help and when or could this be something else?

Brief Answer:
Did you have a fever before before being put on medications?

Detailed Answer:
Hi and thank you so much for this query.

I am so sorry to hear about this pain and the diagnosis of diverticulitis. I will like to know hat made a change from IBS to diverticulitis. IBS and diverticulitis are very similar in presentation but for the fact that diverticulitis would have fever and elevated White blood cells on testing. If this were not present, then am afraid the antibiotics might not have been the best drugs for this condition. In any case, if there is no diverticulitis, the antibiotics would not cause any extra harm.

In addition to drugs, healthy diet, regular exercise, fruits and vegetables are very much needed to help with IBS and diverticulosis/diverticulitis. I will suggest you pick on this in in your day to day living.

I hope this helps, I wish you well. Thanks for using our services and feel fee to ask for more information and clarifications if need be.

i have had IBS for several years and never have had pain that stayed right or my sigmoid area and radiated into my back...I am very constipated as well....I am seeing a Specialist on March 30th when I will have a coloncoscopy.
Is there anything I can do to reduce the level of pain as it wakes me up in the night as well.. It just never goes away 24/7 and it is wearing me down.

I have not had a fever throughout this.

Brief Answer:
With constipation and no fever, this is likely diverticulosis!

Detailed Answer:
Hi,

Thanks for this follow up information. I am so sorry to hear about the constipation. Like i mentioned, getting the stool softer through exercise, diets, fruits, vegetables and fibers would be helpful. if need be, please do not hesitate to use a laxative for this.

Pain medications can only be prescribed by your doctor. Ask him about an anti-spasmodic like bisacodyl to relieve the cramps. With the upcoming colonoscopy, more information would be obtained and the exact treatment plan established and executed to address this.

I wish you well and let me know if this sounds like something you would want to stick to.
