Suggest Treatment For Diarrhea, Nausea And Abdominal Pain In An Elderly Person

default
Posted on Fri, 17 Feb 2017
Question: I am 82 years old and I have had watery diarrhea, stomach & abdominal pains, nausea, no appetite since 12/22/16. My doctor thought I had stomach flu that was going around at the time. I got worse and went to the ER where a CT scan ruled out appendicitis. I was also tested for Cdiff, which was negative. My doctor referred me to a GI doctor, but I could not get an appointment before 2/15, when I will have had this problem for two months. Do you have any suggestions as to what this could be and what I could do to help myself? Will appreciate anything you can tell me. Thanks.

Brief Answer:
It could be infection of the bowel.

Detailed Answer:
Hi
As per your description, it looks like infection of the bowel. It could be due to contaminated food or water.
There are many bacteria, parasites apart from C.difficile which cause these symptoms.
You need Antibiotic.
I prescribe Antibiotic Levofloxacin 250mg twice daily,Capsule Pre and Probiotic twice daily after food.If loose motion is associated with mucus/blood, I will add Metronidazole tablet 400mg twice daily.
As you need Antibiotic, you should get doctor's prescription.
Avoid green tea,coffee.
Hope I answered your query.
Regards
