Suggest Treatment For Diarrhea And Vomiting

default
Posted on Tue, 4 Nov 2014
Question: Hi, I was on a trip overseas until last Sunday during which time I got sick. I got sick the last couple days of my trip and have been having diarrhea since. The condition has been getting progressively worse. I was able to go to work at first but now it is Sunday (1wk after returning) and I have been vomitting up everything I've been eating and drinking for the past three days. I have also continued having the diarrhea maybe 10times a day, no blood in the stool. I have gone to see two different doctors and am awaiting the stool test results which should be in tomorrow. It seems like this would be some sort of virus, would taking antibiotics help? or anything else? I'm worried as I've gone a week hardly able to eat anything and now any intake either solid or liquid gets thrown up. Overall am feeling very very lousy.

Brief Answer:
Food poisoning/intestinal parasites to rule out...

Detailed Answer:
Hi XXXX,

I have gone through your medical history and feel sorry for the situation you are in.

1. You have been on a trip overseas until last Sunday during which time you got sick with diarrhea, vomiting/nausea.
Possible causes include:
- food poisoning/intolerance
- intestinal parasites (depending on the country you had the trip)

2. You are saying to have done some stool testing as part of your doc's evaluations. I hope the tests would include examination of stool for ova/parasites, culture of stool and complete blood count.

3. Until the tests results are in, I highly recommend to:
- follow BRAT diet: banana, rice, applesauce, and toast, thus, your stomach won't get upset
- increase water intake
- take Greek yogurt
- avoid foods that would induce vomiting or diarrhea (chilly, spicy, oily, etc.)

4. With regards to antibiotics, I advise to wait for the test results first, Meanwhile, you can take OTC:
- probiotics to optimize intestinal flora
- ranitidine to reduce stomach acidity
- tasectan or pepto bismol to stop diarrhea

Wish fast recovery!
