Question: I have been suffering from an upset stomach for about two weeks now and when i burp it has a strange after taste and a strong odor to it. It doesnt smell or taste like rotten eggs like every website says it has a strong acidic smell to it and it really hurts to burp. Also i am passing gas that has a strange strong odor as well. I am going regularly to the bathroom and no diarrhea. I was diagnosed with gerd a few years ago but this is much worse. Any ideas?? Please help.

Hello!

Thank you for the query.

Such symptoms can be caused by some stomach or esophageal issues including peptic ulcer, stomach inflammation or esophageal inflammation. As you have had GERD, your upper digestive tract should be checked with gastroscopy.
Bad smell when burping indicates that the food stays in stomach for too long. There might be some problem with connection between the stomach and duodenum.
Another possibility is some bacterial infection of the digestive tract. It may be chronic. Could appear after some antibiotic intake or travel.
I suggest you to consult gastrologist and have gastroscopy done. You should also start probiotic intake.

Hope this will help. Feel free to ask further questions.
Regards.

Thank you for your answer. I do have another question. I have an appointment tuesday with my dr and tomorrow his office is closed due to the holiday. Is there anything over the counter i can take to help subside the pain and odor? Do you think i should take a trip to the emergency room or just sit tight until Tuesday afternoon? I do have hep c would that have anything to do with it?

This is not an urgent condition. You can wait with it. In a meanwhile you may try PriLOSEC OTC. But the symptoms may last even with this medicines.
If you do not have yellow eyes, no dark urine, whitish stool, Hepatitis C is not the reason.

In such case, your symptoms can be caused by acute liver failure. It is common for viral hepatitis to cause stomach upset, nausea, vomiting, strange odor (liver odor).
In such case you should not wait any longer. Please consult hepatologist as soon as possible and have liver tests and ultrasound done.

Regards.
