Question: My mother is 86 years old and diagnosed with moderate depression. The psychiatrist prescribed Nexito 5 mg and Clonotril . 5 mg to be taken at night. Since then she is not able to sleep at night at all. She also has hypertension for which she was taking Etizola 1 mg and other medications. The doctor stopped Etizola and prescribed Clonotril instead. Please advise.

Brief Answer:
Dose of Clonazepam can be increased

Detailed Answer:
Hello thanks for asking from HIM

I can understand your concern. Nexito is Escitalopram and in some individuals the drug is known to result in insomnia. I usually advise my patients to take Nexito in morning after breakfast. This will help to improve her sleep to some extent.

She was taking Etizolam 1mg. Etizolam is fast acting compared to Clonotril and this is the reason she is having problem in sleep onset. Secondly she has been given 0.5 mg Clonazepam and the dose can be increased to 0.75 or 1 mg to help in good sleep. You can talk with her psychiatrist to increase the dose of Clonazepam and to to readjust dosing of Nexito to morning.

Thanks and Take care
