Question: I started Phytoestrogens today because I had a hysterectomy 3 years ago with ovaries removed and my body, moods and energy are very low. My question is why does the Phytoestrogene make me weepie and depressed after one application?

Brief Answer: It is not the phytoestrogens Detailed Answer: Hello and welcome to health care magic, I understand your problem. Many women go through this phase after hysterectomy and it is difficult to deal with it. However phytoestrogens are not known to cause such symptoms. They are most likely attributable to the menopausal status and low hormone levels. We have been consuming them since ever without realizing it. I suggest that you take them for a few more days to see if the symptoms have any relation to the compound. If you feel that you are not tolerating them stop them. I am not sure as to why you are not on HRT for a short time. It would help to know the reason for hysterectomy, any other medical illness and personal or family history of cancer. I also suggest that you take help of a psychiatrist to help you out of the situation as antidepressant drugs may be needed for a short time to tide over the phase. I understand the things but do not worry. Similar problems are faced even after natural menopause, so it is just that you have to face it a bit earlier and will get over it sooner. Try other therapies like dietary modifications to include more of soya beans, fresh vegetables, whole grains and garlic as they provide estrogens. Also daily exercise early in the morning, fruit juices, yoga help to drive away toxins from the body and clean the system. Good books, good company and spending time with the people you like also help in stepping up the mood. A determination to get over all this is most important. You have already taken the first step by trying to get a consultation about getting out of things. You will do well. Hope this satisfies your query. Thanks for using HCM. I had numerous fibroids inside and outside my uterous. Since i did not plan on having anymore children, I had the hysterectomy. My GYN had me take only gel estrogene for hormones, I used too much of it and developed a PE. I was trying to find a natural relief for my surigical post menopausal issues, foggy disconnected feeling, confusion, poor concentration, short term memory, major mood swings, weepiness, anxiety, no libdo at all, feeling much older than my years, I'm only 45. I have met with a Psychiatrist I have no interest in prescribed medications, I don't like the side effects. I want a better quality of life for myself, so I thought Phytoestrogen might be the option for me.

Brief Answer: You may try them. Detailed Answer: Hello and welcome back, I understand your issues very well. Anti depressant drugs are difficult to tolerate initially. However once a person gets used to them they give rise to a feeling of well being. So you need to give them some time to act. You may also try to change the medicines if you find that they are not working well. But the doctor needs time to see their effect. It takes upto 3 months in some people for the effect and sometimes dose adjustment may be needed. However if you feel you are not tolerating them and want to take phytoestrogens it is OK as the symptoms are due to hormones. Most of the time the symptoms tend to decrease over time say 4-5 years. So it is only a matter of time. Libido has got a very high emotional component. Women with absent uterus will show a normal libido while those with intact uterus may have none at all. Please do not feel like this. The ovaries were not going to last forever. I have performed a lot of hysterectomies and find that the attitude is important. You must keep up a positive attitude. It is good that the uterus was removed as multiple fibroids indicate and estrogen excess and may have lead to cancer in the future. You have already had a PE and know that estrogen is not the best of the hormones for our body. You had an estrogen excess and maybe this is the reason you are having more problems now that it is gone. Do not worry. Teach your body to adjust to it. Try to eat sprouted soya beans, all types of green leafy vegetables, legumes, sprouted pulses, and small amounts of nuts daily. Eat at least 2-3 fruits daily. Calcium tablets must be taken to avoid osteoporosis. Life style changes, multivitamin tablets and diet modifications along with daily exercise help to relax the body, provide nutrients to keep it fit. Try phytoestrogen protein powders that can be taken with milk twice daily. I hope that this answered the query. Please feel free to ask more. I am always here to help. Take care. Dr Madhuri Bagde

You are a very good doctor. I can tell you really care about your patients physical and mental well being. Are hormones, stress and anxiety related? Being that I have no Ovaries. I have noticed panic attacks, which is something I never had before my hysterectomy.

Brief Answer: Thanks a lot! Detailed Answer: Hello and thank you very much for the compliment. I just want my patients to get better and feel it is my responsibility to give the best I can. About the hormones: Various complaints that many women experience after menopause are related to changes in hormones. All the hormones in the body are interlinked. So low levels of some may lead to increase in others and disturb the delicate balance. The body needs time to adjust to these. During the peri menopausal period, there is a slow decrease in hormones before they finally disappear or become low enough to cause menopause. In women with surgical menopause, this transition is not there, hence the symptoms are more severe and difficult to adjust. So symptoms of anxiety, stress all appear abruptly. It becomes difficult also for people surrounding the patient as they are not able to understand the abrupt change. You have had a stormy post operative menopausal syndrome. It will take a lot of will power as well as help from a behavioral therapist to tide over things. He will be able to guide you about dealing with the panic attacks also. But eventually you will do it. So please first make a determination that you want to live a full and happy life. Do not hesitate to seek help. Have a good day. Dr Madhuri
