Question: I cut my skin between thumb and point finger. It doesn't hur now. I have been cleaning it and putting neosporin. Now the surrounding skin is whitish. Why is that? It is infected or just from neosporin and covering it to keep it together? Help! Thanks

Brief Answer:
Please give feedback and photos

Detailed Answer:
Hi.
Thanks for your query.
You have rightly noted all the reasons of white skin.
I would like to know the a few thongs :
When has the cut occurred? How old is the injury?
How has it occurred?
Can you please send a good photo of the wound after thoroughly cleaning with liquid povidone iodine?
This will help me to assist you more.

I would advise in such a situation the following :
Clean and dress the area lightly with liquid povidone iodine two times a day.
Continue Amox three times a day.
Add anti-inflammatory like ibuprofen and multivitamin.
Consult a surgeon if you are in doubt.
Keep the hand in elevated position if there is edema.

Awaiting for your feedback.

Brief Answer:
Please send photograph after cleaning

Detailed Answer:
Got the photograph.
Please clean the would with hydrogen peroxide and if the whitening goes away- it was due to Neosporin.
From the photograph this looks to be Neosporin as well as effect of maceration.

Waiting for the photograph after cleaning.

The signs of infection in such a wound are:
Pus formation.
Swelling around
redness
Pain/tenderness.

I believe it's effect of maceration. how do i treat maceration? i don't see any signs of infection. the inner skin is actually better than last friday. the other skin is still detached but I guess it will take time? I just want to make sure that I'm not infected by the photos I sent and help me how to treat it and taking precaution. how long do you think before my skin intact again? should I continue to keep it together? what should I do. I really do appreciate your help. God bless you!

Brief Answer:
As explained- not infected as seen in this photo.

Detailed Answer:
Thanks for your photo.
There is no sign of any infection, hence nothing to worry about at this front.
Yes, this is maceration and you need to removed the detached white skin and the healing will be faster.
Simply clean the wound with hydrogen peroxide, do not rub-in as it is not necessary in this wound.
Apply liquid povidone iodine. Let it dry. It dries fast. Then apply sterile bandage only
minimum layers so that the serum/ discharge gets evaporated to avoid further maceration.
Apply the bandage when the hand is, as if, in a glass holding position for proper approximation of the skin edges.
Continue Amox at 8 hourly interval. Take probiotic and Multivitamins.

I am sure this will heal very fast, hardly few days.
