Suggest Treatment For Cough And Fever In A Child
Question: Hi Doctor,
My daughter is 4 year's old. Since morning she has some cough and fever. We have given her Suventus D for cough and Meftal DS for fever. Right now she is fine. But I am worried because as per our past experience, I guess she is suffering from either viral infection or throat infection.
I just want to let you know that, 15 days before, she was suffering from fever and at that time, we have given Meftal DS and Augpan DS(antibiotic). At that time, her fever was gone in 2 days but after that throat ulcer (white patches) came out and it takes around 6 days to recover. That time was very terrible for my daughter as she was unable to eat or drink anything. Some one that time suggestef as to give bifilav so we have also given Bifilac at that time.I am not sure how the throat ulcer occur and how they get removed.I have also given b complex polybion syrup as well.
So my question is why they ulcer coming and should I need to take any precaution?Or its any medicine side effect?
The same ulcer problem occur 3 months back as well. At that time also same scenario (viral infection)

Viral fever can cause apthous ulcers.I woulds suggest you to continue with suventus D for cough and Meftal DS for fever.
It is better to avoid antibiotics unless indicated.
Ulcers can be managed with local application of solution like Zytee lotion along with multivitamin.The exact cause of ulcers are not known but fever precipitates the ulcers.
I wont get worried for her ulcers as it improves as the baby grows.

The fever came back in every 5-6 hour..I have given ibulgesis as I thought may be due to Meftal DS side effect the ulcers are coming because she has a past record of viral fever but in last 2 cases, my pediatrician start prescribing maftel DS and after that this unlcer problem comes out.
So any issues with ibulgesis? if not then how many times I can give ibulgesis in a day?
Also, she is complaining pain in her fron teeths and having little bit cough ad well.
is any thing serious..I mean is something to worry about..some of my friends says..if fever coming back then it could be typhoid?
Please suggest.

Paracetamol is the safest antipyratic. I would suggest you to give paracetamol.You can give it at an interval of 6 hours.Do tepid sponging for better result.
In case even after giving paracetamol fever persists you can give ibuprofen.It can also be given at an interval of 8 hours.
Although ulcers as a side effect of mefenemic acid is not known but if you have noticed that ulcers are due to Meftal-P better avoid it.
Both paracetamol and ibugesic(Ibuprofen) also work as an analgesic(pain killer).So you need not to give anything extra for pain in teeth.
Suventus D contains Ambroxol(mucus thinning agent) and chlorpheniramine(antiallergic).It will help in cough.
It is not always that if fever is coming back it is due to typhoid.
The most common cause of cough and fever is some viral infection.
In viral infection fever usually starts declining in frequency and/or severity after 72-96 hours.So make a temperature chart to monitor the trend of fever and if fever persists longer or there are any other significant symptoms consult your physician for evaluation and management accordingly.

Maxtra contains chlorpheniramine (antiallergic) with phenylephrine(decongestant helps in running nose) while suventus contains only chlorpheniramine.
I would prefer Maxtra as it has both the ingredients.
